When It’s Time to Say Good-bye

My cousin recently lost her cat a few weeks ago.  She was understandably upset and instant messaged me on Facebook to ask me a few questions.  Her beloved cat was 17 years old and up until recently was in fairly good health for a senior cat.  Basically her cat died of old age and her kidneys just stopped working.

As every pet parent knows and dreads, this is the worst decision that we will need to make for our cats. As my cousin talked about the past few months with her cat, she and I talked about quality of life for her cat and what she did for her during this time.  I hope through our discussion that she came to the realization that she did all she could for her. And now, she must go through the grieving process and help her three year old daughter understand and grieve as well.

We all want to know we did the right thing when it comes to euthanize our fur kids.  In those first few dark days, we wonder if we did the right thing at the right time and know that one day I will see them again.   I told her that our cats rely on us to know when it is time.  After sharing your life with your cat, I believe that we do know when it is time to say good-bye.  I hope that after our discussion, her guilt was reduced and she knew she gave her the best care she could and in the end, she did the right thing for her cat.

I always send this poem out to those who are grieving.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

There are plenty of resources to take advantage of today on grieving for an animal.  Be sure to take the time and grieve and remember the good times with your beloved cat.  After all, your cat was a cherished member of your family.  Please know that after all is said and done, you did the right thing.
